Soon after the strikes, the Israeli army said its warplanes had targeted sites of the Palestinian faction Hamas in northern Gaza.

It added that the strikes came in response to the firing of a rocket from the Palestinian enclave earlier in the day.

Earlier Thursday, Israeli media reported that a rocket fired from the Gaza Strip had fallen into southern Israel, but caused no casualties.
